Profile

Barring Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni is arguably the most popular and definitely the most scrutinised cricketer from India. He has done so coming from the cricketing backwaters, the mining state of Jharkhand, and through a home-made batting and wicketkeeping technique, and a style of captaincy that scales the highs and lows of both conservatism and unorthodoxy. Under Dhoni’s captaincy, India have won the top prize in all formats: the No.1 Test ranking for 18 months starting December 2009, the 50-over World Cup in 2011 and the World Twenty20 on his captaincy debut in 2007.

Cricketing profile

Mahendra Singh Dhoni started his first class career in the year 1999-2000. His one day international debut came after playing five years of first class cricket on the 23rd of December 2004 against Bangladesh. The venue of the match was in Chittagong, Bangladesh. Unfortunately, he was run out on the first ball he faced. It wasn’t a great debut for him where batting is concerned. Luck wasn’t on his side in the first four matches he played. Where as on the fifth match which was played against Pakistan in Visakhapatnam, Dhoni came to the crease one down and managed to score 148 runs from just 123 balls. He hit 15 boundaries and four sixes. He got his first man of the match award that day. Not only a good wicketkeeper but Dhoni proved himself to be a first class batsman too. He is one of the few finest wicketkeeper batsman India has seen after a very long time.

On the 31st of October, Dhoni broke the record of highest runs scored by a wicket keeper by securing 183 runs against Srilanka which was played at Jaipur. Adam Gilchrist was the former record holder with 172 runs.

Before he started playing cricket, he was a football goalkeeper. Its said he drinks around four litres of milk everyday but he denied it by saying that has been exaggerated a bit. He said he loves milk and drinks around a litre on a daily basis.

On the 2nd of December 2005, Dhoni made his Test cricket debut against Srilanka which was played in Chennai, India.

Accused for her role in murdering her daughter Sheena Bora, TV tycoon Indrani Mukerjea will be produced in court on Monday along with other accused Sanjeev Khana and her driver Shyam Rai. A Mumbai court had on Saturday extended the police custody of the three prime accused in the Sheena Bora murder case for three days. Before her police custody ends on Monday, Indrani was taken to her residence in Worli on Sunday, apparently to connect a few “remaining dots” in the murder mystery. Indrani was later brought back to Khar police station. This was Indrani’s first visit to her residence since her arrest in August. Her husband and former Star India CEO Peter Mukerjea, who has been extensively grilled in the case, was also present at their residence. During the over 60-minute quest when the cops and Indrani were at the Mukerjea’s Worli house, she was taken to her fourth floor residence. She was also seen gesturing to the accompanying policemen in the direction of a garage in the residential premises, which, according to police is the place where Sheena’s body was kept on the day she was killed. The three accused have been arrested on charges of murdering Sheena and disposing of the body in a Raigad forest in April 2012. Police are awaiting forensic results of samples of the skeletal remains found in Raigad forest where Sheena’s body was allegedly dumped. Police had on Thursday claimed that Indrani had confessed to murdering Sheena and were now also investigating if someone else could have been involved in the alleged murder. “The scope of probe is large and the accused is a hard nut to crack. They have used modern tools like email and Internet to plan the murder. The progress shown in investigation is already on record and the police have not wasted a single day,” special public prosecutor Vaibhav Bagade said. Requesting the court to extend Indrani’s police custody, he said, “It may appear filmy but we need to find out why this particular place was chosen to dump the body. Her custody is for a short period considering the vastness of investigation. We need to know who else helped her and her emails need to be studied.” Indrani has been accused of murdering her daughter Sheena along with the help of Sanjeev and Shyam in May 2012.

Lahore: Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee complained to Nawaz Sharif after the outbreak of the Kargil conflict that he had been shabbily treated and made the Pakistan premier speak with Bollywood legend Dilip Kumar who pleaded for controlling the situation, says a new book.

Narrating a startling anecdote recounted to him by Saeed Mehdi, the ex-Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Sharif at the time of the Kargil War in May 1999, former foreign minister Khurshid Kasuri says, “According to Saeed, one day he was sitting with PM Sharif when the telephone bell rang and the ADC informed the PM that the Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee wished to speak with him urgently.”

During their talks, Vajpayee expressed his grievances that he had been shabbily treated by Sharif after having been invited to Lahore, Kasuri writes in his book ‘Neither a Hawk Nor a Dove’.

Sharif looked surprised at the words of Vajpayee, who complained that while he had been received in Lahore with such warmth, Pakistan had wasted no time in occupying Kargil.

Sharif said he was not aware of what Vajpayee was saying to him and promised to get back to him after talking to Chief of the Army Staff General Pervez Musharraf.

Before the conversation could end, Vajpayee told Sharif that he would like him to speak to somebody who was sitting next to him during their conversation, Kasuri writes.

Sharif was astonished when heard the voice of Dilip Kumar (Yousuf Khan originally from Peshawar), who said, “Mian Sahib, we did not expect this from you since you have always claimed to be a great supporter of peace between Pakistan and India”, Kasuri writes in the book.

Let me tell you as an Indian Muslim that in case of tension between Pakistan and India, Indian Muslims become very insecure and they find it difficult to even leave their homes. Please do something to control this situation, Dilip, a recipient of Pakistan’s highest civilian honour Nishan-e-Imtiaz, told Sharif.

Kasuri feels that he has made his point, “if even the great icon Dilip Kumar, as an Indian Muslim, felt insecure in case of tensions between India and Pakistan”, it would not be hard to imagine the difficulties faced by ordinary Muslims in periods of tension between the two countries.

The former foreign minister says that he has seen first-hand that it is possible to have a meaningful peace process between the two countries and how quickly such a process could change the paradigm of relations between them.

He concludes with his conviction that peace is possible between two countries and that it would have a very positive impact on the status of minorities in both the countries.
